Community Outreach!

Author Gaetano Amato has been conducting a series of workshops for the Torrington, CT public schools. The workshops were conducted as part of the family literacy programs in the Forbes Elementary School, and included an evening program for Hispanic parents and their children to acquaint them with how to use his movement book, Upside Right, in working on movement skills with their children. Each parent was presented with a personal copy of the Spanish edition of the book. Future presentations will include a visiting author day at the Forbes and East Elementary Schools, as well as a presentation for the Early Start program, as part of Torrington’s Fit Together Community initiative.
This year the book “Upside Right – A Children’s Guide to Movement’’ from our Get Kids Moving Now! book collection was chosen for the Annual Reading Aloud Day Program to be read in 100 classrooms in elementary schools in the city of Torrington in the State of Connecticut. The program takes place once a year and GKMN is proud that one of the books from their collection has been chosen by the city of Torrington to fulfill this program.
Gaetano Amato, during a family program at the Forbes Elementary School in Torrington, CT., teaches parents how to engage in physical activities with their children.
For 20 years, this program has been an initiative of the Northwest’s Connecticut Chamber of Commerce, presently sponsored by Alcoa Foundation, part of Alcoa-Howmet, and the City of Torrington school system. It is designed to stress the importance of reading to elementary school children throughout the Northwest Corner. The sponsor of the program provides funding to purchase library quality books that are selected by a group of library media specialists and language arts consultants from local schools.
